Ryan conducted some research on Robert Merton and gave me a clear overview of his work. His explanation of Merton's view of disciplinary knowledge and evidence in empirical research in the hard Sciences in contrast to evidence used in qualitative research in the social social sciences gave me more context into how Bazerman was using Merton's theory in his article.

Charlyne’s reading of the abstract and her understanding of the course assisted in the formulation of framing questions;
Charlyne’s knowledge of Goody’s work, which was more extensive than my own, provided a wealth of insight into the driving forces behind the article;
It provided me with support that was lacking in my own prior research;
The decisions that we made about structuring our investigation of the work allowed me to set implicitly-stated goals for myself as I moved through the different stages of understanding.
