Basic Research

The basic stage began with the assignment of the project and ended with our decision to pursue individual research.

Basic Research (Charlyne)

• Since I was not familiar with Robert Merton's theory of the middle range, I began an initial library his work that Bazerman referenced in his article.
• From the perspective of a graduate student interested in Writing Studies as well as a teacher of writing in higher education, I attempted to follow the logic of how a sociological view like the theory of the middle range could apply to Writing Studies.

Basic Research (Ryan)

• I am only too well aware of what I do not know in one field alone; the application of sociological theory to writing research seemed to be a difficult leap of logic to accomplish;
• My past research (independent, undergraduate, and graduate) did not provide much background in sociology, so I found myself at something of a loss.
