The developmental stage lasted from our decision to pursue our research independently to the start of our interview. Our research here was largely independent, although we did discuss matters in class when we were using the same sources or creating questions for our interview.

Development of Research (Charlyne)
  • Searching for the original journal, Written Communication where “Theories of the Middle Range in Historical Studies of Writing Practice.”
  • Reading and taking notes on the Editor's Introduction to Written Communication.
  • Researching Carolyn Miller’s scholarship of rhetorical studies, which Bazerman references in our interview.

Development of Research (Ryan)
  • Creating questions shaped my developmental research, and specifying those questions further with my partner directed my research more specifically to the task of the interview;
  • My research, toward the end of this stage, took its direction solely from the interview in that I was attempting to make certain Dr. Bazerman did not have to waste time explaining the simple concepts underlying his use of the middle range except when I saw the concept as contradictory (which would have made it part of an interview question).
