The synthetic stage of reading the article began with our interview with Dr. Bazerman and concluded with the creation of this site. The emphasis of the stage is bringing the disparate elements of our exploration together, or synthesizing them, into a cohesive understanding of both the underlying logic of the article and our own developing understanding of the text.
Synthetic Interview (Ryan)
The interview was lengthy and highly informative. Charlyne and I split the transcribing task, with the idea in mind that we would be analyzing the text rhetorically in order to find the themes of Dr. Bazerman’s perspective and his developing line of argument;
The transcription allowed me to focus initially on the material directly related to his argument (i.e., not background information or description), which helped me orient myself in terms of identifying the levels of importance throughout various segments of the interview.
